Cultural Celebration of Careers & Education Pathways Expo
Wednesday 21st July saw the first ever Cultural Celebration of Careers & Education Pathways Expo take place at the Shepparton Harness Racing Club. The day was attended by approximately 300 people, including 150 students from the various secondary schools across the Goulburn Murray Area, as well as 52 exhibitors from different organisations and industries.
The Careers and Education Expo, is aimed at informing Indigenous students in the Goulburn Murray area from Year 7 and up and their families, about the opportunities of education training and employment options available in our local community.
The Expo had a strong influence on Indigenous culture with a traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, as well as performances from the Dharnya Mologa Dancers, The Debra Cheetham Children’s Choir and the Indigenous Hip Hop Group. We were fortunate enough to have the day hosted by Australian Indigenous Comedian Sean Choolburra who travelled down from Queensland for the event.
Local dignitaries also attended the expo, local Mayor Geoff Dobson, Kaiela Planning Council’s Paul Briggs as well as VAEAI Chairperson Geraldine Atkinson.
The day was deemed a success by all who attended with some very positive feedback provided by students, exhibitors and local community members. The day would not have been successful without the hard work and dedication from the Working Group that comprised of representatives from Ganbina, ASHE, La Trobe University, VAEAI, Dept Planning & Community Development, Dept of Justice, Kaiela Planning Council, Gallery Kaiela, DEECD and GMLLEN.
We will be holding the Cultural Celebration of Careers & Education Pathways Expo next July and look forward to everyone attending!
