Work Experience
for Industry

Offering work experience placements is a practical way for businesses across the Goulburn Murray to invest in the region’s future workforce. By opening their doors to students, employers can showcase their industry, introduce young people to real workplaces and help them better understand the career opportunities available locally. For many students, this may be their first exposure to a professional environment, and a positive experience can spark long-term interest in a sector they may never have considered before.

Offering work experience

Opening your doors to young locals seeking work experience will help you:

  • Build a local talent pipeline
  • Promote your business and industry
  • Gain fresh perspectives from young minds
  • Strengthen community ties and reputation

Making your career path aspirational for students

Many young people in our region have had limited or no exposure to professional workplaces, and don’t know where to begin when planning their futures. A great experience can spark ambition and open doors.

Managing the workload of hosting a work experience student

Hosting students is a rewarding experience both for the student and the team. The structure of the placement offered to students can vary, based on your ability as an organisation.

  • Many people assume a one week block is required, but this is not the case. Format and design are flexible, so have an open mind and consider other ways you could support a student to have exposure to the workplace.
  • Share the load, assign a mentor per day, or per activity, to share responsibilities.
  • Consider work experience for quieter periods of the year/month to minimise stress and pressure on the team.
  • Encourage staff to remember how it felt when they were first making decisions about their futures. Students need supportive environments to assist them to learn well, this will set the tone for a good experience.
  • Building a relationship with GMLLEN can also assist with a pipeline of work experience students down the track.

Administration and compliance

Work experience is supported by GMLLEN. We’ll help you navigate the paperwork required by the Dept. of Education, including:

  • Complete the Work Experience Arrangement Form
  • Completed Forms ensures insurance covered by the Dept. Of Education
  • Non Government Schools are to provide Public Liability for students on placement
  • Matching a student to your opportunity

Promote your experience as a ‘work experience provider’

Be proud of your involvement and share this experience with others. Bring staff along on the journey by sharing information via your internal channels, plus promoting more broadly in industry via channels like LinkedIn or customer and industry communications. This will help build momentum across the region and raise the profile of work experience as an option.

Big picture benefits

By offering work experience, you’re helping shape the future of the Goulburn Murray Region. You’re giving young people a glimpse into a world they may never have imagined and showing them that they belong in it.
